Tracy B. Gapin, M.D., FACS

Dr. Gapin’s deep desire to help his patients, paired with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, has kept him at the forefront of medical advancements in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Gapin has been a pioneer in the U.S. for a minimally invasive option to treat prostate cancer-high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)-which better preserves patients’ quality of life following treatment. Previously, surgery or radiation have been the only options, both carrying risks of post-treatment sexual dysfunction and incontinence.

After a 10-year clinical trial, HIFU now has FDA-approval, however, it has been performed worldwide for 20 years. Dr. Gapin has been successfully treating patients at a clinic in the Bahamas for four years making him one of the most experienced urologists in the U.S. at the outpatient procedure, which takes about two hours. He also is at the forefront of advanced diagnostic techniques to better detect prostate cancer, a crucial advancement since older biopsy techniques miss 30 to 50 percent of cancers. Using 3-D MRI imaging and targeted ultrasound fusion biopsy, accuracy is boosted to 95 percent. He combines this with genomic profiling to identify biomarkers that can help avoid unnecessary biopsies.

Dr. Gapin is Board Certified in urology and joined Florida Urology Specialists in 2004. He recently founded Sarasota Prostate Care to focus on advanced prostate care diagnosis and treatment. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and completed his general surgery internship and urology residency at the University of Florida.

With two children under age three, Dr. Gapin relishes the time he spends with family and someday hopes to enjoy golf and tennis again.

Matthew J. Perry, M.D.

Combining a lifetime interest in nature and science with a desire to help others made a career in medicine a natural choice for urologist Dr. Matt Perry. His interest in urology grew because it was the first specialty to use robotic surgery for minimally invasive procedures. That interest spurred him to complete six years of training at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic where he also served as chief resident and as a clinical instructor. Dr. Perry also works to deliver the clinic’s model of state-of-the-art medicine with a strong culture of compassionate care-giving in service of patients, with whom he likes to develop collaborative and personal relationships, involving them with decisions about their own care.

Dr. Perry’s practice encompasses general urology with a focus on delivering excellent outcomes for patients with prostate, bladder and kidney cancers, kidney stones, prostate enlargement, erectile dysfunction, and female incontinence. While he has extensive expertise in robotic surgery and minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Perry’s philosophy is to consider a broad range of treatment options to find which is best for an individual patient. He appreciates the high caliber of care and collaborative spirit within the local urology community and the collegiality that spurs him to deliver the highest level of care he can. That care has earned Dr. Perry recognition as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for the past three years.

Originally from Miami, Dr. Perry enjoys Sarasota’s smaller town atmosphere and its natural bounty. With his strong interest in nature conservation, he and his wife participate actively with Mote Marine. He also enjoys water sports, fishing, kayaking, and paddle boarding in local waters and, along with a friend, is building a Downeaster-style lobster boat. Dr. Perry also loves experimenting in his garden growing vegetables, fruit trees, and herbs, and wants his young daughter to grow up with dirt beneath her fingernails.

To ensure you receive optimal diagnosis and the full range of treatment options for your particular condition, each of our dedicated physicians has completed a minimum of nine years of extensive medical and surgical training before entering private practice.
